Att illustrera och måla är för mig väldigt olika. En illustration är oftast ett beställningsarbete. När det är ett beställningsarbete ligger syftet, målet, användningen och motivet till att göra den egentligen hos beställaren av arbetet. Mitt arbete blir att tolka och ge beställarens önskemål ett uttryck med hjälp av former och färger i bild.
När jag illustrerar planerade byggnader, vägar och torg handlar det oftast om att redogöra för ett rumsligt sakförhållande. Bilden, illustrationen vänder sig oftast inte bara till beställaren utan är även information. Informationen, bilden, ska kunna förstås av allt från en liten arbetsgrupp till en större allmänhet. När jag illustrerar ett djur, ett hus, en person eller en miljö så är det beställarens syn på verkligheten och hans eller hennes känslor eller inre bild jag försöker illustrera eller rättare sagt, visa. En illustration kan också förtydliga ett verbalt resonemang, något intellektuellt, något utstuderat.

Illustrerar gör jag alltså främst för andra. Det händer att jag illustrerar egna saker också, då är jag beställaren, men även då handlar det om att redovisa sakförhållanden även om bilden föreställer djur och människor, levande varelser. Det är i alla fall så jag vill använda ordet ”illustration” eftersom jag behöver ett ord som specificerar just den kvaliteten i det jag gör. Det är det specifika i mitt görande som jag vill betona. Illustrationen är ett hantverk för mig.
Att måla gör jag däremot i egen regi. I målandet kan jag undersöka och utveckla mitt synsätt. Det är experimentellt och jag prövar mig fram. I måleriet bestämmer och undersöker jag vad som ska uttryckas, vad syftet är med målningen om det alls finns något, liksom användningen och motivet. Jag kan om jag vill undersöka färgen, ljuset, känslan eller uttrycket.
För att göra bra illustrationer behöver jag måleriet, eftersom det är i måleriet jag lär mig något nytt både när det gäller teknik, handlag och skicklighet.
Att måla på beställning skulle fordra att jag fick helt fria händer, i annat fall blir det enligt det här sättet att definiera, en illustration.
Kort sagt. Det primära som skiljer enligt min mening, är om bilden utförs med mina egna motiv och genom min vilja eller om det sker på uppdrag där jag ska tolka och uttrycka någon annans motiv och vilja.
Varför vill jag skilja på det? Varför välja just dessa ord till dessa två olika uppsättningar av kvaliteter? Kanske för att, så vitt jag vet, det saknas ord som visar på just den skillnaden. Varför jag behöver kunna peka på den, behöver jag nog fundera lite mer på.
Idag, år 2015, så tycker jag fortfarande att det är en viktig kvalitetsskillnad jag försöker beskriva men egentligen vill jag inte låsa upp ordet illustration till den skillnaden, det känns som att jag begränsar det och missar en viktig betydelse det har. Det underförstådda, att jag självklart också kan göra en illustration på mitt eget uppdrag visar på att det finns fler kvalitetsskillnader mellan måleri och illustrationer, än den jag nu försökt beskriva. Kanske skillnaden även består i att målningen i högre grad refererar till själva målandet, handlingen och illustrationer syftar mer på att representera ”någonting”.

To illustrate and paint differs for me vastly. An illustration is often a work assigned to me. As an assignment the purpose, the goal, the use and the motive to do it, lies with the one who has assigned the work to me. My job is to interpret and give the assigners wish an expression by the means of shapes and colors in a picture.

When I illustrate planned buildings, roads and squares most of the time it is a task about describing a spatial relationship between objects. The picture, the illustration is not only made for the assigner’s eyes but also is information. The information shall be understood by anyone, from a small working group to a larger public in general. When I illustrate an animal, a house, a person or a milieu it is the assigners view on reality, his or her feelings or inner picture I try to illustrate, or more correctly put, show. An illustration can clarify a verbal reasoning, something intellectual, something studied.

Illustrating I do for other people mostly. It happens that I illustrate my own things too, then I become the assigner, but even then the illustration is about describing spatial relationships between objects even if the picture represent animals and persons, living beings. Anyway, this is how I want to use the word “illustration” since I need a word to specify that quality in what I do. It is something special in my doing I want to emphasize when using it. To illustrate is for me a craft.

To paint on the other hand, I do with me, myself, as assigner. When painting I can investigate and develop my way to look, my view. It is experimental and I try my way ahead. When painting I am the one deciding what to be expressed, the purpose with the painting, weather there is one or not, as well as the use and the motive. If I want to, I can investigate, the color, the light, the feel and the expression.
To make good illustrations I need to paint, since it is when painting I learn something new technically and is developing my knack and skill.
To make a painting as an assignment would demand that I got completely free from the assigners wish otherwise it would turn, following this way to define it, into an illustration.

To put it short. The main thing that differs, in my point of view, is if the picture is made from my own motives and my own will or if it is an assignment where I am supposed to interpret and express someone else’s motive and will.
Why do I want to separate it? Why choose these two particular words to set these qualities apart? Maybe because there is, as far as I know, a lack in words to point out this difference, and I need to be able to point at it. Why I need to point at it, I need to consider further.

Today, year 2015, I still think it is an important difference in quality I try to describe, but I really do not want to limit the word illustration to that difference, it feels like it will lead to miss out significant meanings it might carry. That I in the concept behind illustrations include being my own assigner as well, shows that there are more differences between painting and illustrations than the one I now tried to describe. Maybe the difference also lies in that painting, in a higher degree, refers to “the act of painting” and illustration aims more to represent “something”.
